BERGENFIELD, NJ – The Borough of Bergenfield has taken another major step forward in enhancing traffic and pedestrian safety with the installation of a new set of traffic calming devices at key locations throughout the community. Thanks to a $100,000 state-funded grant, approved at the March 18th Mayor and Council Meeting, the Borough was able to add these critical safety measures at no cost to local taxpayers.
The new equipment includes:
- 16 Pedestrian Crosswalk Signals for 8 locations– flashing signs that activate when a pedestrian presses the button, illuminating bright warning lights visible from a great distance to alert drivers.
- 10 Flashing Stop Signs for 5 locations – designed to reduce the risk of drivers missing important intersections.
- 10 “Your Speed Is” Digital Signs for 5 spots– to alert motorists of their current speed in real-time.
- 1 Speed Monitoring Box – used to collect data and monitor speed patterns in high-risk areas.
The strategic locations for these installations were identified by the Bergenfield Police Department Traffic Division, with the goal of targeting areas most in need of enhanced traffic safety. The equipment was built and installed by the Bergenfield Department of Public Works (DPW).
“Traffic safety—and more importantly, pedestrian safety—is paramount,” said Mayor Arvin Amatorio. “We were able to introduce these vital safety initiatives without any burden to our taxpayers. I also want to give special praise to the Bergenfield Police Traffic Division for their work in pinpointing the areas that needed these upgrades most. I also appreciate the Traffic Safety Committee, which continues to collaborate to promote traffic and pedestrian safety, which includes our Police Department, DPW, the School District, and other departments of the borough.”
Police Chief Mustafa Rabboh added, “The support from the Mayor and Council in seeking out grants like this is essential to improving public and traffic safety. It’s initiatives like these that bring positive, life-saving changes to our community. We’re proud to be part of a Borough that prioritizes safety in such a meaningful way.”
Mayor Amatorio emphasized the importance of collaboration across departments, stating, “The ability of our Department of Public Works to quickly assemble and install these signs shows just how committed our team is to keeping Bergenfield safe and moving forward.”
These traffic calming devices are already making an impact and represent another step toward a safer, more pedestrian-friendly Bergenfield.
